As the oldest among the four Imperial Cities of Morocco, Fez stands as a captivating blend of history and excitement. Its medina, particularly Fes el Bali, is the most complete in the Arab world, preserving its authenticity for over a millennium. Often hailed as the cultural capital of the country, Fez comprises Fes el Jdid, the modern Ville Nouvelle, and the iconic Talâa Kebira. Join your guide for a half-day journey through the narrow streets of the medinas, starting at the historic Bab Boujeloud gate.
Witness the distinctive Spanish and Tunisian architectural influences along Talâa Kebira, and explore the vibrant shops and markets. Delve into the ancient art of leather production at the Chouara Tannery, where men employ age-old techniques amidst dye-filled stone pots. Admire the mesmerizing zellij tilework at the 14th-century Al Attarine Madrasa before venturing to the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, and cemetery in Fes el Jdid.
If time allows, a visit to Ville Nouvelle will unveil a fascinating contrast in architectural styles. Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Fez, guided by the intricate tales woven into its streets and landmarks
Day 2: Fez to Rabat
Dedicate your morning to further exploration in Fes. Consider a visit to a local Ceramics and Tilework Collective, where skilled artisans craft intricate mosaics by fitting together small pieces of tile. Following this enriching experience, venture west to Rabat, the imperial city and current capital, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and rich historical significance.
Discover the medieval fortifications of the Chellah Necropolis nestled in the heart of Rabat, where Roman and Islamic ruins offer a glimpse into the city's storied past. Enter Rabat's original city center through the majestic gates of the Kasbah des Oudaias, and meander through its serene white and blue-washed streets.
Take a peaceful interlude at the Andalusian Gardens, a 20th-century haven away from the bustling crowds. Explore the Hassan Tower, an unfinished minaret from the 12th century, part of the incomplete mosque and Mausoleum of Mohamed V. Marvel at the red sandstone tower and remnants of about 200 columns, echoing the abandoned aspirations of a bygone era.
Day 3: Rabat to Casbalanca and than to Marrakech
As you bid farewell to Rabat and set course for the dynamic cities of Casablanca and Marrakech. The day unfolds with a visit to Casablanca, a city that seamlessly blends modernity with tradition. Day 3 promises a seamless blend of urban sophistication and traditional allure as you traverse from Casablanca to the enchanting Marrakech.
Day 4: Explore Marrakech
Known as the "Red City" for its ancient red sandstone city walls and structures that boast a history spanning a millennium, Marrakech stands as a prominent economic hub. Rooted in Berber heritage rather than Arab origins, the city was once a pivotal trading capital for tribes from the Atlas mountains. Orient yourself in the vibrant tapestry of Marrakech, with the bustling Jemaa el-Fna Square at its heart. To the north lie the bustling souks, while the Koutoubia Mosque and Gardens grace the western side, and to the south, the kasbah area unfolds, housing the Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, and El Badi Palace. In the modern Ville Nouvelle, the Majorelle Gardens offer a tranquil escape.
Opt for a unique medina tour aboard a calèche, a horse-drawn carriage, allowing you to acclimate to your surroundings gracefully. Marvel at the fondouks, medieval inns repurposed into residences, expansive shopping areas, and workshops, providing a fascinating exploration. Navigate to the Koutoubia Mosque, taking solace in its gardens adorned with fountains and palms, as you appreciate the mosque's non-accessible interior, featuring 12th-century foundations and a striking minaret.
As the evening unfolds, Jemaa el-Fna transforms into a lively spectacle with musicians, storytellers, acrobats, dancers, and even snake charmers. Meander through rows of food stalls offering a diverse array of meals, fruit drinks, dried dates, and snacks. Whether you opt for a quick bite or prefer a more relaxed experience, seek out one of the cafés perched above the square, allowing you to savor a meal while enjoying the vibrant spectacle below.
Day 5: Departure
Conclude your trip with any final gift or souvenir purchases, ensuring you have mementos to cherish. Alternatively, if your departure schedule permits, consider exploring the Majorelle Gardens.
